The shortlist for the 2026 Metro Employer’s Excellence Awards has officially been unveiled – and it’s packed with some of the UK’s most recognisable employers, fastest-growing businesses and most inspiring workplace leaders.
From household names including ScottishPower, NatWest, Stagecoach, AstraZeneca, Morrisons, Tesco and DHL, to ambitious scale-ups and regional success stories such as RWinvest, Legacie, Next Energy Solutions, Jarron Developments, Kyzen Sports, Sterling Plastering Group and Tate Steel, this year’s shortlist shines a spotlight on the organisations and individuals helping to redefine what great employment looks like in Britain.
The annual awards celebrate excellence across workplace culture, diversity and inclusion, employee wellbeing, leadership, sustainability, training and social impact – with hundreds of entries submitted from organisations spanning every corner of the UK economy.
Standout names and major categories
Among the standout names shortlisted for Large Employer of the Year are ScottishPower, AstraZeneca, Bentley Motors, Morrisons and United Utilities, while the fiercely contested Outstanding Employer category features Greggs, Monzo, DHL and Story Homes.
The property sector has once again demonstrated its strength, with Liverpool-based Legacie and RWinvest securing multiple nominations across several categories. Both businesses feature prominently throughout the shortlist, reflecting their continued growth and investment in people, innovation and workplace culture. Jarron Developments joins a highly competitive Property Employer of the Year category alongside some of the industry’s most respected names.
The scale-up community is also strongly represented. Next Energy Solutions has been shortlisted for both Scale-Up Employer of the Year and Outstanding Commitment to the Environment, highlighting its growing reputation within the renewable energy sector. Rising sports business Kyzen Sports has secured a nomination for Small Employer of the Year, while co-founder Jack Mackreth has also been recognised in the Young Business Leader category.
Manufacturing and industry continue to showcase some of the UK’s strongest employers. Tate Steel’s Tony Johnston is among the finalists for Business Leader of the Year, while logistics giant DSV has earned recognition in Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility and Marketing Leader of the Year through nominee Adam Jones.
Meanwhile, Sterling Plastering Group has secured a place on the Small Employer of the Year shortlist, underlining the important contribution made by SMEs and specialist businesses to the UK’s economy and employment landscape.
Sustainability, inclusion and employee support
ScottishPower continues to demonstrate its broad impact, earning nominations across multiple categories including Large Employer of the Year, Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility and Outstanding Commitment to the Environment.
The energy sector is particularly well represented, with SP Energy Networks shortlisted for Sustainable Business of the Year alongside UK Power Networks, United Utilities and Willmott Dixon, reflecting the growing importance of sustainability and responsible business practices in the modern workplace.
There is also recognition for some of Britain’s most innovative employee-led initiatives. NatWest’s Rainbow Network has been shortlisted in the Best Employee Support Network category, while organisations including Bentley Motors, Tesco, Nationwide Building Society and Legal & General have all been recognised for creating inclusive and supportive workplace communities.
Individual excellence is also in the spotlight, with Stagecoach East Scotland’s Scott Hall nominated for Outstanding Employee, while Liverpool FC’s April Tomlinson, Monzo’s Tara Ryan and Warner Bros. Discovery’s Asif Sadiq feature among the contenders for HR Leader of the Year.
Elsewhere, high-profile organisations including Network Rail, The Premier League, Wickes, Linklaters, Booking.com, Adobe, Diageo, BAE Systems, JD Sports, KPMG, Deloitte and Siemens all feature across the extensive shortlist.

Organisers say the breadth of this year’s finalists reflects the changing face of employment in Britain, where workplace culture, purpose and employee experience are increasingly becoming key drivers of business success.
